Central Goldfields Shire Council formally received the Maryborough Skatepark Committee petition at an Ordinary Meeting of Council last night (26/06).
The petition has 1,000 signatures and provides a vision to build one of the best skatepark facilities in Victoria.
Their vision is for a contemporary facility; a facility that caters to a range of users; a challenging facility for a range of age groups and an opportunity for fun and fitness.
The Central Goldfields Shire 2018-2019 Budget, adopted by Council at last night’s meeting, includes $28,000 for design works for a new skate park.
As part of this Council will work with the community, including representation from the Maryborough Skatepark Committee, to develop a site and design brief for a new facility.
Once a site and design is finalised Council will work with funding agencies and potential sponsors to finalise development and delivery of the skatepark.
Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said it was fantastic to see a group of local young people so passionate about making a difference to their local community.
“It’s vital for young people to feel that they are an important part of the community, that they have a voice, and that Council is interested in what they have to say. Often young people feel intimidated by how council operates and I want them to feel comfortable in approaching Council and expressing their views.
“Together they have created a ground swell of interest in this project and we’re thrilled to be able to invest $28,000 to get this project off the ground and to take the first steps towards a new facility for our youth community to enjoy for many years to come.”
