Thank you to all of those who provided the Australian Electoral Commission with a submission regarding the potential move of Central Goldfields Shire into the federal seat of Mallee.
Whilst it was disappointing that the AEC did not accept the request to hold a local hearing, it is important to understand that if we want to get our views and opinions listened to, then we must make our voices heard. I congratulate all those who took that opportunity.
Just like any Shire, we want to have the best representation we can get for the Central Goldfields community.
The current sitting member for Mallee, Andrew Broad, is an excellent Member of Parliament who goes above and beyond for his electorate but the reality is, Central Goldfields Shire residents will have difficulty raising their concerns in Federal Parliament with Mr Broad’s electoral office based in Mildura.
Mildura is of course a number of hours away from Central Goldfields Shire and we may not receive the representation we need, given that Mallee is Victoria’s largest federal seat.
It is imperative that we are located in a federal seat where the sitting Member of Parliament is easily accessible and can campaign for our community’s needs effectively.
We, as a Shire, will continue to actively campaign to receive the best representation for our community.
