Central Goldfield Shire Council Chief Administrator Noel Harvey publishes a column in The Maryborough Advertiser every Tuesday. It's also available to view here every week:
Tuesday 18 September
Are you ok? It’s a simple question but to someone in need, it can mean everything.
Suicide prevention is a highly complex and sensitive challenge all across the world and here in Central Goldfields, we want to make sure everyone is getting the mental health support they need.
Council marked R U OK? Day last Thursday with a breakfast and morning tea at the Depot and Maryborough Regional Library respectively.
A big thank-you must go to the Maryborough Lions Club for cooking Depot and Council staff breakfast.
While these events were simple in nature, they sent a powerful and vital message to staff and the community members who attended that it is okay to ask for help and to ask each other how we are coping with life.
We all experience life differently, we all have highs and lows, and no one can be strong all the time – just because someone seems bright and happy on the outside doesn’t mean they feel the same way on the inside.
If an organisation or community group within the Shire also marked R U OK? Day last week, I congratulate you for raising awareness for this sensitive topic.
It is important to remember, however, that we ask each other how we are doing not only on one day of the year but regularly so nobody in our community feels isolated and cut off from the world.
