Council facilitated the formation of a consortium to successfully bid for an $8.5 million bulk streetlight upgrade project that covers one third of Victoria. This project was led by Council’s Sustainaibility, Regulatory Assurance and Emergency Management (SRAEM) unit in collaboration with the Central Victoria Greenhouse Alliance and the Wimmerra-Mallee Sustainability Alliance. The region will upgrade nearly 23,000 streetlights through this program, and save ratepayers approximately $41 million over 20 years in energy costs.
For Council, Lighting the Regions equates to a federal grant of $200,000 and a financial saving through increased energy efficiency of approximately $1.2 million over 20 years. Approximately 900 streetlights will be upgraded.
